Dr. Diane Guests

Bert Herring MD, Author OF The Fast-5 Diet And The Fast-5 Lifestyle

Bert Herring MDBert graduated from Texas A&M School of Medicine with his eye on a surgical career and was selected for a surgical internship at the Bethesda Naval Hospital. Surgical residency would have to wait, though, until he repaid his U.S. Navy scholarship obligation with a three-year Marine Corps infantry battalion tour.

Bert’s Marine tours delivered a first hand introduction to the complexity of problems on an international scale as he fulfilled his duties in Saudi Arabia and Kuwait during Operation Desert Storm and in Okinawa, Japan. Confronting the realities of global problems, his interest in surgery waned. While surgery would allow him to fix problems one person at a time, cancer research would open the possibility for small discoveries to benefit thousands or even millions.

Bert secured a cancer research position in the National Cancer Institutes (NIH). His work at NIH yielded a new model for testing cancer treatments and although the model is still used, it was Bert’s effort to squeeze more research work between the time constraints of child care obligations that became his first application of a “Study of One,” which sparked the Fast-5 flame.

Fast-5, the weight-loss tool Bert researched, named and then shared with the world via a print and e-book, has spread across six continents through word of mouth communication, has been translated into five languages and has helped thousands of people solve an overweight or obesity problem that for many had become “unsolvable.” Today Bert is a champion for the study of one.

Dr. Steven Lewis, Cancer Survivor

Dr. Steven LewisDr. Steven Lewis received a Ph.D. in exercise physiology from Stamford University in 1977 and is a visiting professor of clinical biomedical science in the Charles E. Schmidt College of Medicine at Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton.

He was in superb life-long health, until he was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, a disease with a survival rate of only 5%. In spite of this, Steven and his wife struggled to achieve and deliberately maintain an extremely positive attitude. This choice started a “ripple effect” that created an exceptionally caring and upbeat community of family, relatives and friends and enabled this community to return even more positive energy to Steven.Dr. Steven Lewis

The story became even more intense when Steven endured a second bout of pancreatic cancer that metastasized to his liver. Surviving a second bout of pancreatic cancer is so rare that no statistics are kept. Today, Steven is cancer free, in excellent health and works out strenuously. Virtually all of us, at some point, will experience extreme life difficulties involving circumstances such as severe illness, injuries, accidents, divorce or natural disasters.

A positive attitude can help us think clearly, be solution oriented and ultimately prevail. Whether Steven physically survived or not, an attitude of complaint and negativity would have shattered his emotional life and that of his family. Steven’s choice was to stay positive and upbeat in spite of his situation. What would you have done?

Dorothy Vernon Brown

Dorothy Vernon BrownIt’s the worst news you ever want to hear. ‘I think you have leukemia’, the young doctor told her.

That was August 2013 when Dorothy Vernon Brown was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML).

As a devoted mother, wife, entrepreneur and serial volunteer it was a kick to the gut.

Her treatments have gone well but Dorothy, like many minorities on the donor list, is in DESPERATE need of a stem cell transplant to continue to live and prevent a relapse. Less than 25% of patients who need a stem cell transplant will find a match in their family; regrettably Dorothy is one of these.

Her best chance of finding a match is to find a donor from her own ethnic group. She is of Jamaican heritage with a mixed background of Black and Irish.

Dorothy urgently need the help from the Jamaican/West Indian community and young men (women not excluded) between the ages of 17 and 35 to become a donor with OneMatch Stem Cell and Marrow Network (www.OneMatch.ca).

This will increase her chances of finding the optimal donor. The OneMatch Stem Cell and Marrow Network consists of 72% Caucasian and 28% ethnic origins. Only 1% is black.

William David Brown, PhD, DABSM, CBSMWilliam David Brown, PhD, DABSM, CBSM has treated hundreds of patients for a full range of sleep disorders over the past twenty-three years while serving as the clinical director of several hospital-based and free-standing sleep centers.

He is currently a Sleep Psychologist at Children’s Medical Center in Dallas where he is the primary clinician diagnosing and treating pediatric insomnia using behavioral techniques. Additionally, he is starting a fellowship in pediatric behavioral sleep medicine and serves as Assistant Professor in Psychiatry at UT Southwestern Medical School in Dallas, where he obtained his training in sleep medicine.

Dr. Brown is a Diplomate of the American Board of Sleep Medicine (one of the few PhDs in the U.S. to hold that distinction), a Fellow of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, and is certified in behavioral sleep medicine. He is a provider of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, the mainstay in insomnia treatment today. He is in a very elite group of doctors who treat insomnia and are certified in behavioral sleep medicine; there are fewer than 200 doctors in the United States who hold that distinction.

His academic writing on the subject of sleep has included articles for academic journals as well as book chapters on sleep medicine, covering topics such as the neurocognitive and functional impairment in obstructive sleep apnea, parasomnias, insomnia, psychiatric disorders affecting sleep, and the effect of medication on sleep. He has also contributed to books on polysomnography as well as a review book for physicians taking the Sleep Board Exam.

As a lead author of a groundbreaking research paper on adolescent sleep habits and driving, Dr. Brown helped demonstrate that sleep duration and school start times have a negative effect on a teen’s ability to drive. Dr. Brown subsequently was an invited speaker to all drivers’ education instructors for the state of New Hampshire to discuss sleep as a safety issue for new drivers. In the early 1990s, Dr. Brown was hired by the Employees Assistance Program (EAP) for the State of New Hampshire to provide education on the importance of sleep for all state employees when the state implemented its zero-tolerance policy for employees falling asleep at work. He did the same for the National Transportation Safety Board in New Hampshire when new hours of service rules were being developed for truck drivers.

Dr. Brown is currently involved in research on thermoregulation and sleep, sleep for children with Muscular Dystrophy, and the use of a novel device to improve muscle functioning and sleep.
